This is a list of things that makes games just suck!

Enemies

Slime as the first enemy throughout the game

The weakest enemy is usually a slime

Final Boss is a generic demon

Final Boss is a dragon

Final Boss is an angel

Final Boss is the hero's evil twin or dark side

Final Boss is a rival or friend that went evil

first boss is suppose to kill you as a part of the story

Characters

There's always a rebellious princess who's father thinks the outside world is a complete threat to her

Main character uses a sword(one of those that can pass)

The main villain has darkness and the hero has light powers

The characters some how have elemental powers..

When Yuri Lowenthall voices a character i'm lik wtf

When the main character is mean until the end (Yuri Lowenthall)

There's always a love interest with the main character and some random girl who joins the party

Female's are healers or mages

Males are some kind of knights

Your rival helping you defeat a hard boss, but in a mean tone probably saying: "This doesn't change a thing".

Bad Story

Games based on movies. Some are somewhat good, but the ones that aren't consist of area's that aren't even in the movie making you go "Wtf?" Also: Releasing games before the movie comes out.


In a game (especially FPS) where you and your team go to kill something and then everyone in your team is systematically killed off while you survive.

Destiny

In the name of your game. Blah. So over used and cliché.

If a person from the game tells you how to play, they say "press the X button to jump". What X button?

Collect 100 of something on every level in order to obtain an essential item!

Weapons that look the same but are given different names and stats!

Weapons that look different but are used exactly in the same way as the 1st one you get! This goes for attires too!

Gay nerd humor like a powerful demon cant be killed with the weapon u spent like eons leveling up but is not immune to a stick beating!

Those games that bring out loads of expansions when they could have released the content with the original game!

Princess plots revenge on some guy who killed her father

Main villain gets killed by one of his pawns or something

The main character's home gets destroyed by a villain

The game is medieval (This one can pass, but it's overused)

Worst story imaginable! Hero has to save the princess from a demon/dragon.

Second worst story! Good Empire against the Evil Empire.

Characters die easily in cutscenes but take nine million hits in a fight.

When somebody dies as a part of the story, cant the healer use a revive spell?

It takes the whole game, and the world to almost get destroyed for the main character and the girl to confess their love.

No special ending, all the villains are dead so they live happily ever after.

You start the game with everything, then some random guy takes your powers away.

The hero has an uncontrollable demon that conveniently awakens during an important fight

If the game's setting is in some sort of MMORPG type game, then the villain is a computer virus.

The rival is cooler than the whole cast of the game

never herd of this one but it sounds like a nice plot to me, but yea good list going so far i like it.

Haha, I like it. Some clichés are definitely overused but that doesn't stop Zelda from being an enjoyable game. I guess a lot of these are used in Final Fantasy and stuff like that.

Hm, while I can agree that many of these are way overused, such as the Evil Empire, I'm gonna be a comic buzzkill and disagree overall. I'm gonna be way too analytical and say that many cliches like Light/Dark and awakening inner demons are overused because they resonate with players. I see fantasy in part as an extension of known phenomena into the realm of the extraordinary. Consider then, that as we mature we often find we are capable of things we never thought possible. Characters with inner demons (even literally) are something we can relate to on that level. To disagree again, elements like betrayal within villain ranks are ok too because they reflect unpredictability and complex power relations. You don't have to off the villain in every game, but you do need power dynamics or the game gets boring...

Geez! I'm usually not such a stiff board, but I found this post while in a more serious mood. I'm just finishing the Iliad right now - maybe that has something to do with it.

But do be aware that many celebrated writers used such cliches. Shakespeare, Dumas, and Tolken come to mind. And we all have great memories of games that used these cliches. So I would say they are overused, but do not make a story bad exactly. You might be interested in Joseph Campbell's writings about the progression of story within myth... Basically all stories have similarities regardless of time and place, many elements of which show themselves in cliches.

And Slime is the most awesomely overused first enemy ever! I love the weak slime!

Sewer levels suck! Hunter the reckoning had 1 or 2 city levels to begin with then a seemly endless journey into the sewers until u come out to the last level! Fail!

Yea, and they die in some weird order where the main characters best friend or love interest are the last ones to survive. Either one, the other, or both, but if both then the best friend dies.

If there's a series of games with different characters in each game, There's always a game with all the characters from all the different games, and the main character is like some kid who never shows up in the other games. Also, u have to choose between a boy and a girl most of the time. The best example is Tales of the Worlds, and i mean all 3 Tales of the Worlds.

Another 1 is if there's a sequel to a game with the same characters in it that are totally different from the first one. How many times is the world gonna get attacked?

Another 1 is if the main character "dies" or gets attacked to look like they died. Just cut the bullshit because we know that they're alive.

Another one is when there's a big ass speech before the final boss.

Another 1 is when the characters act like it's the end of the game. Example: Adam: "This is the final battle!"
Can they predict the times when they kill the villain and when they don't kill him?

Another one is when the main hero's name is Adam or Sieg or Seig. However it's spelled.

Another one is if the main villain is fought more than once, they transform ONLY at the final fight with them. Why do they save it? Why can't they kill everybody right away? (Exception is if they underestimate the hero and his party, but this doesn't go if they fight more than once)

Never pull a "Sigma" villain. And that's one that never dies, after getting killed through alot of games, like Sigma from the Megaman X Series.

Never make the villain like the main hero's rival and shot. Do something like Final Fantasy 12, where the villains never even knew the main character.

Don't ever make a character that competes with the hero, then gets too much power in the end and turns evil and dies.

Never make a protagonist a secret villain or any bullshit like that

NEVER give the main character amnesia.

If the main hero DOES have amnesia, he's related to some kind of villain.

The worst cliche' of all is just a flat out bad game

The hero's THINK that they killed the main villain halfway through the game, but guess again.

When the cover or title has nothing to do with the actual game.
