Hey all. Before long (possibly by the end of the month) I will be releasing a demo for the game I have been developing for well over a year.

These are just some pictures of the game. You'll notice that most of the graphics are stock or slight variations. Part of the purpose of the upcoming demo is to try and recruit some artists to make this a game with original monsters, backgrounds, sprites etc. Mostly, then, the demo will be to showcase the gameplay, which includes custom magic, menus, and other features. I am considering extending the demo to include a story arc as well, which would push the release date into the following month or later.

I really look forward to getting this demo out there!

No title screen yet.

The story is about a man who finds a magic chamber that allows him to relive the lives of people from different parts of the past. He progresses through a labyrinth, unlocking different parts of history and experiencing them firsthand. He is also trying to remove a curse that stops him from remembering/understanding his own convoluted past. As he gains power in this labyrinth world, his power increases in the physical world as well, and he is able to grant his party members the ability to do things like cast magic.

The hero's background is that he was a jail guard who was dismissed on suspicion that he helped a prisoner to escape. He is older than your typical hero, late twenties or thirties, and has a wife.

The story has more serious yet more subtle tones than many games I have played. I'm including themes of betrayal, power, and inequality. The general feel of the world and the events in it may be similar to Yasumi Matsuno games (Vagrant Story, FF Tactics), but easier to grasp... The world is a mix different eras, much like the now popular post-apocalyptic fantasy world, but is still decidedly more of a fantasy world. For example, a communication form similar the internet exists in the world, but things like robots, modern vehicles, and science do not.

You'll notice I didn't mention a distinct antagonist. This is because the character's conflicts will mostly center around the hero versus the world at large. Thus, antagonist(s) will not emerge obviously and immediately.

These are some of the concepts for now. I hope that gave you an idea of the story. Just prod me if you want me to share more!

Wow Mw! I can totally make use of this!

You have this kind of work just lying around? I am always impressed with how quickly artists seem to be able to make awesome stuff.

Any chance you could help me with some parallax backgrounds that loop when they scroll? Something like the background in this pic would work perfectly.

Ooh, wondering also Mw, could I get the picture you made broken down into it's layers? I might try fading the main image into the background a bit and use it for a killer battle background.

It's gonna be tough, but i'll see what I can do. Making a large picture look seemless when looped SUCKS. Anyone notice the witch in the bottom right BWAHAHA! Thats how I roll.

Nice, and thank you. Looping backgrounds are awesome, and if it would be easier I could make use of pics that just scroll vertically or horizontally instead of both. I look forward to seeing your ideas, and anyone else please feel free to add your ideas too!

Out of curiosity, what do people think: Should I release a demo that is basically gameplay, or would you like me to hold on and add some story to the first demo?

It really depends if you're busting to release it or not. However, I'd like to see some story in the demo, like a teaser trailer ^ ^.

Definetly! With the story you have behind your game, after people play the demo they should be asking themselves what happens, why, where? I believe that your that good in story to have everyone on their seats when they reach the end of your demo. Good luck with everything!

My idea was to loose the ravens and the witch in the pic I made for you and to skew the circular thingy to make it look like a battle room, but would it look good to go from pixel map straight to the picture(battle room). I've also been watching my nephew for the last 7 hours, so I haven't had much time to do anything.

I think that would work well Mw. Not sure if I'm picturing it in exactly the same way you are, but I think so. I think if I'm using an appropriate pixel map then the transition would look just fine.

And I'm pretty sure I'll extend the demo with story and all.

And thanks so much for the encouragementBlue and Mw!

@flapbat - from what I've read you have a well thought game that you have been working on for quite some time and you have come to the stage where you want to make the graphics (possibly music) completely original. correct?

due to my new and even more busy schedule, PM me or post any request you would like...
let's say three enemy battlers for starters (description and image size)
and I'll hook it up when I get the chance =-)

I really like the story concept so far and even though I'm a RMXP+XAS kind of guy...
I dig the fact you choose to make your games with RM2K.
I really enjoyed your last demo and I look forward to this one.
