I work on the retail end of the gaming industry and I normally get mixed feed back from customers about DLC (down loadable content). Some love it, some hate it, and some don't even know about it.

A few pros and cons for DLC vs Disc

DLC:
pros - can't scratch, won't lose, only takes up drive space,
cons - downloads can take a while, a corrupt download may require a redownload, glitches, makes your hard drive work harder causing more heat and shorter drive life, nickel and dimed for content adds up...

DISC:
pros - less stress on the hard drive, adds to the collection, can be kept private and not on a public drive, can trade buy sell pre-owned.
cons - takes up shelf space, gets scratched, may get lost/stolen,

Now think about how the gaming industry has changed from 10 years ago... what are we seeing less of? what are we gaining more of??

and last answer... is this going to be a cancer... or a cure... for the gaming industry.

I think DLC is a cure, as long as disc can still be bought. But i think DLC extensions pack are cancer. You pay for an update of the game you already bought.

I see DLC as an excuse to push games to market faster with out worrying about bugs. Before we had update systems content on disks had to be scrutinized over before being released. Now its common to get a new game start playing and run into errors and glitches rather quickly. Then waiting for the updates to fix errors.

Granted thats prolly not "DLC" but game updates.

Some games seem to spam DLC content and expansions to games, one thing that annoyed me was how fall out 3 would stop the game when you beat it, but you could buy DLC to continue playing after you beat the game. which seems like a new way to keep making money off of the same game.

^great feedback guys +

Depending on the situation DLC can either be a cancer OR a cure.
Smart game developers will not nickel and dime their fan base but offer goodies for free or make a major update towards an existing title to reinvigorate the interest and new play value at a decent price.

To hell with that marketing money mongering mischief making gamers pay extra for features in a game that should be already in the game , such as the ending-replay, fricken bullshat.

DLC - future of distro..

Release your games in episodes. nuff said.. make them buy chapters. Its a huge bonus for indie gaming, and such is why its taken off.

2.5 billion for minecraft.

notch gets 1.75 billion.

thats mind boggling.

edit: i didnt say cure or cancer, because it possibly could well be both. Early access/ DLC with the rare few that make it through that stage who love their game and dont take the money and run are a blessing. But selling 1/3rd done games at Half price on the mainstream is cancerous

It's an interesting idea on what Expansions used to be, which was 99% PC exclusive. I was playing MW2 with my friend and was still astounded that IW wanted $10 for a single still on LIVE on a game that's probably 4 years old now. I'm pretty sure even Halo 3's later content is still costly as well, when you can probably go to your local gamestop and pick up ODST for $10 (Comes with all the DLC maps for Halo 3)
